This installation investigates the processes of interplay between the artwork and the audience response triggered by the work. I see this approach as a form of
social interaction whereby the viewer explores their own creative logic, within a constructed and prescribed environment. This created space allows for a dialogue between the artist, the artwork and the viewer.
The installation drew from personal experiences, research on the Rorschach test for psychological diagnosis, as well as the Surrealist notion of automatism and chance driven art making. With this grounding, my studio practice involved the exploration of subconsciously informed creative logic through intuitively driven processes within contemporary art. Within the installation, layered wooden or metal forms act as a tangible representation of this creative logic and thought process. The work is open-ended, and acts as a device for the viewer to experience multiple readings, through the interplay of form and shadow. To facilitate the viewer’s subjective response, the work is designed or installed with the capacity to be manipulated by the viewer with a series of handles attached to a pulley system. In this way, my practice is positioned within a contemporary art context by incorporating the random processes within an installation which addresses the current social role of art through inviting viewer participation.
